The Worm Moon is March’s full moon, happening every year, however, it is a delight when we get to experience a lunar eclipse as well. A rare celestial event indeed, one that will give us the ability to harvest a rare magic.

On the night of March 13-14, 2025, skywatchers in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and parts of Oceania will witness a total lunar eclipse, also known as a Blood Moon due to its striking reddish hue. This celestial event holds significance in both astronomical and spiritual traditions, offering a powerful opportunity for transformation, spellwork, and reflection.

Why is it Called the Full Blood Worm Moon?

This particular lunar eclipse is referred to as the Full Blood Worm Moon due to a combination of natural phenomena:

The Worm Moon is the traditional name for March’s full Moon, originating from Native American and European folklore. It marks the time of year when the ground begins to thaw, and earthworms and beetle larvae emerge, signaling the arrival of spring. The Blood Moon

A Blood Moon occurs when a total lunar eclipse causes the Moon to appear red. During the eclipse, Earth’s shadow completely covers the Moon, and the atmosphere filters out blue light, allowing only red and orange wavelengths to reach the lunar surface. The result is a stunning, eerie glow, often associated with intense energy shifts and powerful magical workings.

For observers in my area and other parts of the U.S., the eclipse will unfold as follows:

• Totality Ends: 3:31 a.m. EDT

• Penumbral Eclipse Ends: 6:00 a.m. EDT
• Totality will last for approximately 65 minutes, offering a stunning celestial display.

How Rare is a Lunar Eclipse?

Lunar eclipses typically occur two to four times per year, but total lunar eclipses are much less common. The last total lunar eclipse visible in North America occurred in November 2022, and the next total lunar eclipse will happen on September 7, 2025, but it will not be visible in North America due to the timing. The rarity of a Full Blood Worm Moon Eclipse makes this event particularly special for magical workings and reflection.

A total lunar eclipse can only happen during a full moon, as this is when the Earth, Sun, and Moon align in such a way that the Earth’s shadow completely covers the Moon. The last Blood Worm Moon before 2025 occurred on March 3, 2007. Prior to that, the most recent one was on March 24, 1986, marking nearly 20-year intervals between these rare events. • Draconic Month – The time it takes for the Moon to return to the same node (~27.21 days).

When these cycles align, an eclipse with similar characteristics recurs. However, the visibility of these eclipses from specific locations varies due to Earth’s rotation and the Moon’s slight orbital inclination, resulting in Blood Worm Moons occurring roughly every 18-20 years for a given region.

Why is There a Blood Worm Moon in Both 2025 and 2026?

Despite the usual long gaps, the 2026 Blood Worm Moon follows the 2025 one due to an overlap in different Saros series. Each Saros series produces its own set of eclipses, and occasionally, two different Saros cycles generate similar lunar eclipses within a short time frame. The 2025 and 2026 Blood Worm Moons belong to separate Saros series, which explains why they occur only a year apart—a rare but possible occurrence in celestial mechanics.
Understanding these cycles highlights the fascinating and dynamic nature of lunar eclipses, making the 2025 and 2026 Blood Worm Moons a unique and powerful celestial phenomenon.
