The Expectation vs. Reality of Magic
At the crossroads of expectation and reality, many witches find themselves questioning everything. You’ve done everything right. You eat well, meditate, practice your craft with dedication, and follow all the steps to manifest your intentions. So why does it feel like the universe has slammed the door in your face? Why are you struggling despite all the energy and intention you’ve put into creating a good life?
For many witches, this moment can feel like a crisis. After all, isn’t magic supposed to work? If we align ourselves with the energies of the universe, shouldn’t things fall into place? And yet, even the most seasoned practitioners find themselves at crossroads where nothing seems to go as planned.
The Myth of Spiritual Meritocracy
There’s a common belief in both religious and spiritual circles that if we do all the “right” things, the universe will reward us. Many religious traditions hold the idea that faithfulness leads to blessings and that hardship is a sign of spiritual failure. This belief seeps into witchcraft in subtle ways:
- “If my spell didn’t work, I must have done it wrong.”
- “If I’m struggling, I must have unresolved shadow work blocking my success.”
- “Maybe the universe is testing me, and I just need to try harder.”
These ideas can lead to self-doubt and frustration. The truth is, magic is not a transactional system where effort guarantees results. Instead, it is a practice of alignment, adaptation, and resilience in the face of life’s chaos.
Magic, Chaos, and the Nature of the Universe
Magic works, but it does not override reality—it works within it. The universe is vast, complex, and often unpredictable. Even the most powerful witches cannot control every variable in life. Some things are simply outside our influence.
Nature itself provides a perfect example of this. The tides do not resist the pull of the moon, and the seasons do not rebel against their cycles. Magic is about working with these forces, not forcing them into submission. When we hit obstacles, it doesn’t always mean we are failing; it may mean that we are being redirected, tested, or called to shift our approach.
Even in mythology, the gods do not always grant immediate relief to those who seek their aid. Hekate, the goddess of the crossroads, does not dictate which path a traveler should take—she illuminates the choices. Similarly, magic does not guarantee an easy road, but it does offer tools to navigate it.
What To Do When Magic Fails
When magic fails and life seems to be falling apart despite our best efforts, the first instinct is often to question ourselves. Instead of falling into self-blame, consider a shift in perspective:
- Magic is not about absolute control — It is about weaving intention into the fabric of reality, but reality has its own currents.
- Some spells take time to manifest — Just because you don’t see immediate results doesn’t mean the energy isn’t working in unseen ways.
- Sometimes, magic leads us through hardship, not around it — Transformation often comes through struggle. The Tower card in tarot reminds us that destruction often precedes renewal.
Practical steps when spells don’t seem to work:
- Divination: Use tarot, runes, or scrying to gain insight into hidden factors or alternative paths.
- Reevaluate your goals: Are you asking for what you truly need, or what you think you need?
- Realign your energy: Take a break from spellwork and focus on grounding, cleansing, or personal reflection.
- Seek mundane solutions: Magic is most effective when paired with tangible, real-world action.
The Crossroads: A Shift in Perspective
Crossroads moments in life are inevitable. They force us to pause, reflect, and make choices. They are not signs of failure but invitations to growth. When things don’t go as planned, consider:
- What can this challenge teach me?
- Is there another path I haven’t considered?
- How can I embrace uncertainty as part of the journey?
Hekate stands at the crossroads, torch in hand, not to remove our struggles but to light our way forward. Likewise, magic is not about eliminating hardship but about guiding us through it with wisdom and resilience.
You are still a witch, even when life falls apart. Your magic is still within you, even when it doesn’t yield immediate results. The power of a witch is not in never facing difficulty but in learning how to navigate it with courage, insight, and trust in the unfolding journey.

For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to be a Grandma. I was fortunate to have two wonderful grandmothers while I was growing up and I have many happy memories of each of them. Today, I live in a “Grandmother’s House” where my husband and I enjoy lots of time with our family. In addition to my role as Grandma to nine grandchildren, I am a daughter, a wife, a mother of three grown children, a sister, an aunt, a friend, a writer, an artist … and a witch.
✨Grandma’s Grimoire✨ is a collection of family wisdom interwoven with a touch of magick. Our goal is to create a living and lasting legacy that we hope will inspire our future generations as well as anyone who is drawn to it.
